The extractor reads the PDF's text layer. Scanned PDFs without one (photos of pages) yield little or no text; this tool does not perform OCR.

Frequently asked questions
How do I copy text from a PDF that will not let me select it?
If the PDF has a text layer, this tool extracts it all at once, which is often easier than selecting page by page. If nothing comes out, the PDF is a scan and needs OCR.
Why did my PDF produce no text?
It is almost certainly a scanned document: the pages are images without a text layer. Extracting text from scans requires OCR, which this tool does not perform.
Does the layout survive extraction?
Plain text keeps the reading order and line breaks but not fonts, columns, or tables. It is ideal for feeding text into other tools, search, or translation.
Is the extraction private?
Yes. The text is read entirely in your browser. Your documents are never uploaded to any server.
